Tracking tourist spending

IThe California Travel and Tourism Commission, in conjunction with Sonoma County Tourism Bureau, released $25,000 in $2 bills in the Sonoma Wine Country during National Tourism Week in May 2009.

The rarely-seen bill, bearing the portrait of Thomas Jefferson (hence "SpendTom.com"), is a reminder of the scope and economic impact of the tourism industry in Sonoma County.

For three weeks, people who received the bills were encouraged to go to this website and register where they got their "Toms" to show how dollars moved from the "tourist" economy to the "locals" economy. In Sonoma County, tourism equals $1.3 billion in destination spending, supporting over 16,000 jobs. This spending is more than $79 million in State and local tax receipts....
